ABOUT
I am Maya Matulessy,a self-taught photographer based in the Netherlands, working across different genres with a strong focus on storytelling, people and identity.
Long before I picked up a camera, my father told me that I had a particular way of seeing. With no formal background in photography, I developed my visual language through curiosity, observation and trial and error.
Growing up surrounded by family, where unconditional support came alongside honesty, real love and harsh jokes, I’ve shaped my sight. I learned to look closely at people, their relationships and the stories that exist beneath the surface.
Studying Interior Consultancy in Utrecht further shaped my understanding of colour, contrast, space and composition. These qualities naturally found their way into my photographic practice, where observation and intuition play an important role.
Today, my work moves across different photographic genres, but remains rooted in a documentary approach. I am drawn to the people, places and cultures that shape our sense of identity and belonging.
